What is wrong
DEXTER AXLE IS RECALLING CERTAIN ELECTRIC/HYDRAULIC (E/H) BRAKE ACTUATOR PUMPS SOLD FOR USE ON VARIOUS TRAILERS. SOME OF THESE PUMPS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY HEAT TREATED. THIS CONDITION CAN CAUSE PREMATURE WEAR OF SOME CRITICAL COMPONENTS IN THESE PUMPS WHICH CAN RENDER THE UNIT INOPERABLE.
What can happen
THE E/H BRAKE ACTUATOR PROVIDES BRAKING POWER TO THE TRAILER BRAKES. FAILURE OF THE ACTUATOR CAN RESULT IN THE LOSS OF BRAKING EFFORT BY THE TRAILER, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
The fix
Recall repairs are free of charge.
DEXTER AXLE IS WORKING WITH THE INSTALLERS AND VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS TO IDENTIFY AND NOTIFY OWNERS WHO MAY HAVE HAD THE AFFECTED E/H BRAKE ACTUATOR INSTALLED ON THEIR VEHICLE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 20, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DEXTER AXLE AT 1-260-636-5311 OR THEIR VEHICLE MANUFACTURER.

A recall means the maker found a safety problem and offers a free fix; it does not mean every unit has the problem. Units affected are as reported by the company. Popular models sell more and so have more recalls and complaints. Official public data; texts are shortened. A dealer can tell whether a single vehicle still needs the repair.
