What is wrong
Takata Corporation (Takata) has determined that certain PSPI, PSPI-1.1, PSPI-2, PSPI 6, PSPI-L, and SPI air bag inflators assembled as part of the frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment, such as after a vehicle crash necessitating replacement of the original air bags, may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, high temperatures, and high temperature cycling. This recall addresses model year 2012 vehicles ever registered in the states of Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
What can happen
An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix
Recall repairs are free of charge.
Takata will be working with vehicle manufacturers to determine into which vehicles the affected inflators were installed either as original or replacement equipment during service. As this work progresses, numerous vehicle recalls will likely be announced by the impacted vehicle manufacturers. Note: Model year 2011 and older vehicles were included in recall 16E-042 for these states. Vehicles registered outside of these states may be covered by recalls 17E-001 or 17E-003.

A recall means the maker found a safety problem and offers a free fix; it does not mean every unit has the problem. Units affected are as reported by the company. Popular models sell more and so have more recalls and complaints. Official public data; texts are shortened. A dealer can tell whether a single vehicle still needs the repair.
