What is wrong
Takata Corporation (Takata) is recalling certain seat-mounted, SSI-20 design type, Side Air Bag Inflators manufactured December 13, 2014, to December 14, 2014. A suspected manufacturing error during production of certain inflator lots may result in unusually high pressures in the inflators upon deployment of the side air bags. This over pressure could cause the inflator to rupture, causing metal fragments to be propelled into the passenger compartment.
What can happen
An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
The fix
Recall repairs are free of charge.
Takata is working with the vehicle manufacturers that used these inflators in their vehicles. Those manufacturers are contacting their vehicle owners and their dealers will replace the seat-mounted side air bag inflators, free of charge. A recall means the maker found a safety problem and offers a free fix; it does not mean every unit has the problem. Units affected are as reported by the company. Popular models sell more and so have more recalls and complaints. Official public data; texts are shortened. A dealer can tell whether a single vehicle still needs the repair.
