What is wrong
OPERATION UNDER EXTREME CONDITIONS OF HIGH HUMIDITY, SALT AND DIRT CAN CAUSE RUSTING OF THE SPLINED SECTION OF THE UPPER STEERING SHAFT. THIS CAUSES INCREASED STRESSES BETWEEN THE STEERING COLUMN UNIVERSAL JOINT CONNECTION AND THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE STEERING GEAR. CONTINUED OPERATION UNDER THESE CONDITIONS COULD RESULT IN UNACCEPTABLE MOTION OF THE LINKAGES.

A recall means the maker found a safety problem and offers a free fix; it does not mean every unit has the problem. Units affected are as reported by the company. Popular models sell more and so have more recalls and complaints. Official public data; texts are shortened. A dealer can tell whether a single vehicle still needs the repair.
