Source: DataPorium Trucking, FMCSA carrier registrations updated October 12, 2026; crashes and inspections for the 24 months to September 30, 2026 [1]. OOS = out of service. R & L Transfer had only 2 roadside inspections, too few for a rate.
The list mixes several kinds of fleets. Parcel carriers (FedEx Express, UPS), truck rental and leasing firms (Ryder, Penske, Budget), school bus operators (First Student, Durham), and companies that run trucks for their own goods or services (AT&T, Nutrien, Frito-Lay, Amazon, Walmart, PG&E) sit next to for-hire freight carriers such as J.B. Hunt, XPO, Old Dominion and Werner [1]. Rental fleets report many power units but few drivers: Ryder lists 328 drivers for 59,883 power units, and Budget Truck Rental 64 drivers for 10,654 [1].
How were the carriers ranked and what do the measures mean?
- Selection: active US carriers with at least 10 power units, freight and passenger, ranked by power units. DataPorium lists 102,584 such carriers with 5,282,731 power units [3].
- Power units and drivers: as the carrier reported them on its federal registration [1].
- Crashes: reportable crashes (a death, an injury or a vehicle towed away) in the 24 complete months to September 30, 2026. Crashes do not say who caused them [1].
- Crash rate: crashes per 100 power units over those 24 months. The average for all carriers with 10 or more power units is 2.99 [3].
- Out-of-service (OOS) rates: the percent of roadside inspections that took the vehicle or the driver off the road until a serious problem was fixed. Across all roadside inspections in the same 24 months, the rates were 22.8% for vehicles and 6.3% for drivers [3]. Carriers with few inspections have rates that swing a lot.
- Safety rating: the latest official compliance review rating; it can be old. J.B. Hunt's Satisfactory rating dates from May 8, 1992 [3].
How do the listed trucking companies compare?
The table adds up every carrier (10 or more power units) that DataPorium links to each listed trucking company, ranked by total power units. The crash rate is total crashes per 100 total power units [1].
