$646.3 billion in August 2026 (seasonally adjusted), +5.4% from a year earlier. Retail trade covers stores and nonstore sellers, not restaurants and bars. The newest month is an early estimate and is revised later.
+20.9% for gasoline stations, the fastest growth over the 12 months to August 2026, followed by miscellaneous store retailers (+14.3%) and sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument, and book stores (+9.6%). The slowest were health and personal care stores (-0.7%) and food and beverage stores (+0.6%).
$139.2 billion for motor vehicle and parts dealers in August 2026, the largest store type, followed by nonstore retailers ($124.0 billion) and food and beverage stores ($84.9 billion).
17.8% in July 2026, compared with 17.5% a year earlier. This is the sales of electronic shopping and mail-order houses ($113.9 billion) divided by all retail sales; online sales that stores make themselves are counted with their store type.
