Layoffs and discharges are counted every month in the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS); the newest month is preliminary and revised later. Initial claims are new claims for unemployment insurance, published every week. Both cover every employer, so they are not the same count as the layoffs listed above.
Layoffs come from state WARN notices (employers must give advance notice of mass layoffs and plant closings), SEC Form 8-K Item 2.05 filings of listed companies, and news reports. One layoff is listed once, with every source that mentions it. A layoff known only from news reports is marked Reported until an official filing confirms it. The number of workers is the number the source states; when no source states one, it is shown as not stated.
WARN notices are included for 15 states: Alaska, Alabama, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington. In other states, layoffs come from SEC filings and news reports only.
149 layoffs were announced in the last 30 days, affecting 30,551 workers where the number was stated. Each layoff is listed once, with every notice, filing and news report that mentions it.
A layoff that is only in the news is marked Reported. When a state WARN notice or an SEC filing matches it, it becomes Confirmed. Workers are counted as the source states them; a WARN notice with several sites is added up into one layoff. When two records may be the same layoff but the match is not clear, they are kept as two layoffs.
149 layoffs were announced in the last 30 days: 140 confirmed by an official filing and 9 known from news reports so far. Where a source stated the number, 30,551 workers were affected. Over the last 90 days there were 423, affecting 67,423 workers where stated.
California (721), Washington (153), Texas (132), New Jersey (130), Maryland (116) had the most layoff events in the last 12 months. States publish WARN notices with different rules and delays, so the counts depend partly on each state's notices.
In the last 90 days, Uber Technologies, Inc. (UBER) with 5 events, Essendant with 3 events, Oracle Corporation (ORCL) with 3 events, Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) with 3 events, T-Mobile US, Inc. (TMUS) with 3 events had the most layoff events. The Layoff Tracker ranks every company.
1.64 million layoffs and discharges in Aug 2026 in the US (1.0% of employment), seasonally adjusted and preliminary, according to the government's monthly Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS). A year earlier the number was 1.83 million. This count covers every employer, also layoffs too small for a notice or a report.
197,000 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in the US in the week ending October 3, 2026 (seasonally adjusted).
Under the federal WARN Act, employers with 100 or more workers must give 60 days of notice before a plant closing or a mass layoff, and many states have their own rules. States publish these notices with the company, the place, the number of workers and the date. A notice is an official record, so a layoff with a WARN notice is shown as Confirmed.
Listed US companies file a Form 8-K to report important events. Item 2.05 is used when a company commits to exit or disposal activities, such as a restructuring with job cuts, that will cost a material amount. The filing does not always state the number of workers; when it does not, the number is shown as not stated.
Confirmed means an official filing exists for the layoff: a state WARN notice or an SEC filing. Reported means the layoff is known from news reports only. When a later notice or filing matches a reported layoff, the same layoff becomes Confirmed; it is never counted twice.
New WARN notices, SEC filings and news reports are added during the day, and this page is updated when new layoffs are recorded. The newest layoff on this page is from October 14, 2026. The official monthly and weekly numbers are updated when the government publishes them.
