Tesla (TSLA) delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter of 2026, up 1.3% from the second quarter but down 2.1% from a record 497,099 a year earlier, the company reported on October 2, 2026 [1][4]. The result beat the company-compiled analyst consensus of 461,974 by about 5% [4]. Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage, below the 15.9 GWh analysts expected, and its shares rose 4.7% on the day [4][5]. Full third-quarter financial results are scheduled for October 21, 2026 [1].
How many cars did Tesla deliver in Q3 2026?
Tesla reports two numbers each quarter: production (vehicles built) and deliveries (vehicles handed to customers). Deliveries drive revenue; the gap between the two shows whether inventory is building or shrinking. The table compares the three quarters of 2026 from Tesla's own releases [1][2][3].
| Quarter | Production | Deliveries | Of which Model 3/Y | Other models delivered | Energy storage deployed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q1 2026 | 408,386 | 358,023 | 341,893 | 16,130 | 8.8 GWh |
| Q2 2026 | 451,758 | 480,126 | 467,762 | 12,364 | 13.5 GWh |
| Q3 2026 | 464,391 | 486,532 | 478,237 | 8,295 | 13.7 GWh |
| Q3 2025 | n/a | 497,099 | n/a | 15,933 | 12.5 GWh |

Deliveries exceeded production by 22,141 vehicles in the third quarter, so Tesla sold cars built in earlier quarters [1][4]. Over the first nine months of 2026, Tesla built 1,324,535 vehicles and delivered 1,324,681, which means the roughly 50,000 extra vehicles it built in the first quarter have now been sold [1][2][3][4]. Year-to-date deliveries were 8.8% higher than in the first nine months of 2025, according to Electrek [4].
The Model 3 and Model Y made up 98.3% of deliveries. "Other models," which include the Cybertruck and the older Model S and Model X, fell to 8,295, down 48% from a year earlier [1][4].
Why did Tesla beat delivery estimates?
Analysts had a wide range of forecasts, from 421,758 to 482,000, according to the 24 estimates in Tesla's company-compiled consensus [4]. Three factors explain why the result came in above all of them, based on the reports available:
- Gasoline prices. US retail gasoline averaged $4.35 a gallon in September 2026, the EIA reported, as the war with Iran pushed up oil prices [6]. Electrek attributed much of Tesla's US demand to high fuel prices, which offset the loss of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit that expired on September 30, 2025 [4].
- China exports. Electrek reported that exports from Tesla's Shanghai plant offset weak retail sales in China [4].
- Inventory. Tesla delivered more than it produced for the second quarter in a row, drawing down stock built early in the year [1][2].
The year-over-year decline mostly reflects an unusual comparison: the third quarter of 2025 was Tesla's record quarter because buyers rushed to claim the tax credit before it expired [4].
What about Tesla's energy storage business?
Tesla deployed 13.7 GWh of energy storage products, mostly its Megapack and Powerwall batteries, in the third quarter [1]. That was up 1.5% from 13.5 GWh in the second quarter and up about 10% from 12.5 GWh a year earlier, but below the record 14.2 GWh of the fourth quarter of 2025 and 2.2 GWh below the 15.9 GWh analysts expected [2][4]. Storage has become an important source of profit for Tesla, so the miss matters more than its size suggests.

What to watch in Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings on October 21
Deliveries are only part of the picture. Tesla said its net income and cash flow will be reported with its full results, which depend on average selling prices, costs and currency moves [1]. The second quarter shows why: DataPorium financial data show Tesla's Q2 2026 revenue was $28.24 billion, but operating income was only $398 million, an operating margin of 1.4%, down from $941 million in the first quarter [5]. Net income was $1.11 billion in Q2, helped by $590 million of other income [5].
The first two quarters of 2026 show how volume and profit can move apart. Revenue rose 26% from $22.39 billion in the first quarter to $28.24 billion in the second as deliveries jumped from 358,023 to 480,126, yet gross profit was almost flat at $4.72 billion and $4.75 billion [3][5]. The gross margin, gross profit as a share of revenue, fell from 21.1% to 16.8% [5]. Research and development spending rose from $1.95 billion to $2.37 billion over the same period, as Tesla kept investing in AI and new products [5].
In other words, the second quarter's extra deliveries added revenue but almost no gross profit. With deliveries up only 1.3% in the third quarter, the October 21 report will show whether the gross margin recovered from 16.8% or kept falling as Tesla sold down its inventory.
Questions for the October 21 report include:
- Whether higher deliveries and less discounting lifted automotive margins above the second quarter's level.
- How profitable the energy storage segment was after deployments came in below expectations.
- Spending on artificial intelligence, the Full Self-Driving software and robotaxi plans, which drive much of the stock's valuation.
Tesla will post results after the market closes on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, with a webcast at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time [1].
Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in Q3 2026, beating the 461,974 consensus by about 5%, while energy storage deployments of 13.7 GWh fell short of the 15.9 GWh expected.
